FARIBAULT — Runners and walkers with hearty appetites are being sought by River Bend Nature Center.
This Sunday is the nature center’s annual Maple Syrup Fun Run/Walk, followed by its annual pancake brunch. All who register for the fun ran/walk receive tickets to the pancake breakfast and a free gift, said Leah Penn Boris, a River Bend intern naturalist.
And, “no, it’s not a T-shirt,” Penn Boris said.
With the help of volunteers and Treadway Graphics of Faribault, Penn Boris designed a canvas tote bag with River Bend’s logo that is a gift to all who register for the run/walk.

For runners, there is a 5K route, Penn Boris said. But for those with young families or others who prefer to walk, there is a one-mile route. Both routes take participants through prairie, woods and water areas of the nature center.
Last year around 120 runners/walkers turned out for the Maple Syrup Fun Run/Walk, Penn Boris said.
“We are hoping for more this year,” she said.
Running or walking for River Bend is “a nice way to support the nature center and then you get to eat pancakes,” Penn Boris said.
And the canvas tote bag can be used for a reusable grocery bag. “The bag passes on the message of reuse and cutting down on garbage (by eliminating using plastic bags for groceries),” Penn Boris said.
While Sunday’s events at the nature center are fund-raisers, Penn Boris said, they can also be a “friend-raiser” by people going with friends to the pancake brunch or running or walking together with friends or family.
The brunch also gives people the opportunity to taste the maple syrup staff and volunteers made from the sap collected this spring from River Bend trees, Penn Boris said.
“It’s about the only way people can taste River Bend’s maple syrup because we don’t sell it because we make it for educational purposes,” she said.
For sure, Penn Boris said, those who come to River Bend Sunday should have “a sweet” experience by eating pancakes with maple syrup and enjoying nature.
