The Faribault Lakers know what’s on the line Friday.
A loss on the road against New Prague in the DRS Red Division playoffs, and the season is over. A win, and the two squads will face off one more time in a decisive third game on Sunday.
“Hopefully we can at least make a three-game series out of it,” Faribault’s Charlie Lechtenberg said.
In order for that to happen, the Lakers’ offense will need to produce. On Tuesday at Bell Field in the playoff opener, the Orioles blanked Faribault by a 13-0 final in a rain-shortened contest. New Prague starter Chris Hartman held the Lakers to just one hit in five innings.
Lechtenberg said Hartman is one of the top pitchers in the DRS, having started the DRS All-Star game. While he won’t pitch for New Prague on Friday, Faribault will still need to find an offensive rhythm.
“We’ve got to start hitting the ball,” Lechtenberg said. “Hopefully we settle in and get on their pitcher.”
For the Lakers, Josh Mears or Jimmy Roberts will take the hill in Game 2, Lechtenberg said. Whichever pitcher starts for Faribault, the Lakers hope the control issues from Tuesday — New Prague drew 13 walks — will be fixed.
“Walks killed us,” Faribault’s Ryan Archambault said. “We just couldn’t throw strikes.”
Archambault said after Tuesday’s game that the Lakers were timid at the plate, something that he said has to change.
“You’ve got to be ready to hack,” he said. “You’ve got to be aggressive and you’ve got to go attack the ball.”
